A cloud hangs over Representative Jasmine Crockett’s political future as financial records reveal a significant unpaid debt. For over a year, a lien exceeding $3,000 has remained active against her Dallas condominium, a detail brought to light by a review of county records.
The lien, officially filed in April of last year, indicates Crockett’s failure to meet her financial obligations to the Westside Condominium Association. Documents state she “has failed and refused and continues to fail and refuse” to pay assessed fees and related charges, creating a legal claim on her property.
This claim effectively prevents Crockett from selling or transferring ownership of the condo until the $3,047.79 is settled. County officials confirm the lien remains unreleased, suggesting the debt persists as she contemplates a run for the U.S. Senate.
The luxury condominium, purchased in 2014, is located just north of downtown Dallas and serves as Crockett’s registered voting address. The complex boasts amenities like a pool, clubhouse, and residences designed with “spa-like features,” all maintained through homeowner association fees ranging from $222 to $403 monthly.
The financial scrutiny doesn’t end with the condo lien. Recent campaign finance disclosures show Crockett’s campaign spent nearly $75,000 on upscale accommodations, transportation, and security in cities across the nation this year.
These expenditures include stays at prestigious hotels like the Ritz-Carlton and The Luxury Collection, alongside limousine services in cities like Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. The spending raises questions given her representation of Texas’ 30th Congressional District, centered in Dallas.
Adding another layer to the controversy, Crockett’s campaign also allocated approximately $50,000 to security services. This expenditure is particularly notable considering her past advocacy for “defunding the police” and reinvesting in community-based solutions.
In 2021, while serving in the Texas House, Crockett framed “defunding” as a strategy for “fiscal responsibility” and addressing the “root causes of crime.” The contrast between her rhetoric and campaign spending is now fueling criticism.
Crockett’s outspoken nature has previously drawn attention, including widespread condemnation for remarks made about Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who uses a wheelchair. The incident further contributed to a narrative of controversy surrounding the representative.
As she “seriously weighs” a Senate bid against incumbent John Cornyn, these financial disclosures and the unresolved lien present a complex challenge. A decision regarding her candidacy is anticipated in the coming days, potentially reshaping the Texas political landscape.
