A school trip took a terrifying turn when a double-decker bus collided with a low bridge on Spendmore Road in Coppull, leaving several children injured.
The impact sheared off the roof of the bus, creating a scene of immediate chaos and concern. Fortunately, the injuries sustained were largely minor, primarily consisting of scratches and shock.
Nearby, a local bakery became an unexpected haven. A quick-thinking member of the public sought assistance, and the bakery owner immediately welcomed the entire class – around twenty children – offering them a safe space upstairs in their boardroom.
Warm cookies and comforting snacks were provided, turning a frightening experience into something a little less daunting for the young passengers. While shaken, many of the children, especially the boys, seemed to view the incident as an unexpected adventure.
Parents arriving on the scene expressed immense gratitude for the bakery’s kindness and the swift response of those involved. Some children simply boarded the next available bus, while others headed home for some much-needed care.
“We’re just glad everyone’s ok and hope they get some TLC tonight,” said the bakery owner, adding with a smile, “Some of them won’t need their tea tonight – they ate quite a lot!”
Authorities have closed Spendmore Lane between Lancaster Street and Regent Street while they assess the damage and investigate the cause of the collision. The road is expected to remain closed for an extended period.
Police are advising motorists to seek alternative routes and exercise extreme caution, allowing extra travel time. They continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as they become available.
The incident raises questions about why a double-decker bus was traveling on a route known to have a low bridge, as buses routinely use the road but typically aren’t of that height.
The community is breathing a collective sigh of relief that the outcome wasn’t more severe, and focusing on ensuring the children receive the support they need after this unsettling ordeal.
