A seemingly simple online sale turned terrifying last weekend for a Toronto resident. A 17-year-old now faces serious charges after allegedly robbing someone at gunpoint while attempting to purchase a cellphone.
The incident unfolded in North York, near Sheppard Avenue West and Arleta Avenue. The seller had arranged the meeting through an online marketplace, hoping for a quick transaction, but instead encountered a dangerous situation.
According to police, the accused distracted the seller, snatched the phone, and tried to escape with an accomplice. When the seller attempted to intervene, a firearm was brandished, escalating the encounter into a violent threat.
Investigators quickly focused on a suspect and, with the help of the Emergency Task Force, executed a search warrant in Scarborough. The 17-year-old was found at the location and taken into custody without further incident.
The search revealed more than just the suspect. Officers recovered a 9mm handgun and a quantity of cash, adding to the gravity of the accusations. The youth’s identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
He now faces a lengthy list of charges, including robbery with a firearm, weapons offenses, and possession of stolen property. The charges paint a picture of a calculated and dangerous act.
However, the investigation isn’t over. Police are still actively searching for the second suspect – a Black male, believed to be 16 or 17 years old, approximately 5-foot-7 in height.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with online transactions. Authorities are urging anyone arranging to meet a stranger for a sale to prioritize safety.
Choosing well-lit, public spaces and remaining vigilant about surroundings are crucial precautions. Awareness and caution could prevent similar frightening experiences.
Anyone with information regarding the second suspect is urged to contact the Toronto Police Service or Crime Stoppers anonymously. Every detail, no matter how small, could be vital to the investigation.
