Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop described the situation as “unprecedented,” a challenge unlike any he’s encountered in his career. Crews are battling a hidden enemy – a fire stubbornly burning deep within the narrow space separating the two buildings, a space so confined it defies direct access.
The core of the problem lies within the buildings’ construction. Combustible particle board used in the shared walls is fueling the fire, and its location – a gap between 25 and 50 millimeters wide – presents an almost insurmountable obstacle for firefighters. The initial evacuation was triggered by dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide and pervasive smoke.
