A chilling scheme unfolded in the Atlanta area, revealing a sophisticated drug operation masked by an innocent facade. Authorities intercepted a massive shipment of methamphetamine, nearly 1,600 pounds, cleverly concealed within pallets of blackberries.
At the center of the conspiracy is Gerardo Solorio-Alvarado, a 44-year-old from Mexico with a troubling past. He’s no stranger to federal prison, having already served nearly two decades for previous drug trafficking and firearm offenses. His re-emergence into criminal activity sparked a swift response from law enforcement.
The investigation began with surveillance of a Fulton County cold storage warehouse on November 20th. Federal agents and sheriff’s deputies observed three refrigerated trucks, initiating a chain of events that would expose the scale of the operation. A crucial break came when one truck was tracked to a Gainesville gas station.
Solorio-Alvarado was observed picking up the truck’s driver, abandoning the vehicle at the station. A K9 unit’s alert to narcotics prompted a search, revealing a staggering 661 pounds of methamphetamine hidden amongst the blackberries. Authorities then moved to arrest Solorio-Alvarado as he attempted to escape his Gainesville home.
Simultaneously, a second truck was followed to a residence in southeast Atlanta, traveling alongside an SUV allegedly driven by Nelson Enrique Sorto, 36, of Atlanta. Sorto, already on probation for a methamphetamine possession conviction from earlier in 2024, became a key figure in the unfolding drama.
A traffic stop of Sorto’s SUV yielded two firearms and more containers of blackberries. A subsequent search of the box truck parked at the Atlanta home uncovered an additional 924 pounds of methamphetamine, bringing the total seizure to an astonishing 1,585 pounds.
The street value of the seized methamphetamine is estimated to be in the tens of millions of dollars. U.S. Attorney Theodore Hertzberg emphasized the brazen nature of the cartel’s tactics, noting a pattern of concealing drugs within produce shipments – previously cucumbers, celery, and jalapeño peppers, now blackberries.
Solorio-Alvarado’s status as an unlawfully present alien was also highlighted, underscoring the national security implications of the case. His prior conviction guarantees a minimum sentence of 15 years, with the possibility of life imprisonment without parole.
Sorto faces a minimum of 10 years in prison, with a potential life sentence. Both men are currently in state custody, awaiting transfer to the U.S. Marshals Service and a detention hearing where prosecutors will seek to have them held without bail.
This operation is part of a broader initiative, the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF), established through a presidential executive order focused on securing the nation’s borders and combating illegal activity.
