A quiet Connecticut neighborhood became the scene of a harrowing tragedy following a day-long standoff with a barricaded man. It began with a routine eviction attempt, but quickly spiraled into a dangerous confrontation with law enforcement on Oaklawn Avenue.
Police were called Tuesday morning after a state marshal, serving a court-ordered eviction notice, came under fire from 63-year-old Jed Parkington. Parkington repeatedly discharged a firearm at responding officers, damaging police vehicles and prompting a return of gunfire, yet miraculously, no officers sustained injuries.
The standoff stretched for hours, with hostage negotiators desperately attempting to establish communication and de-escalate the situation. Despite their efforts, Parkington was later found deceased inside the home, the result of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The scene, however, held a far darker secret. As officers began the painstaking process of clearing the residence, they discovered a decomposed body on the second floor, immediately launching a separate investigation into the circumstances surrounding this additional loss of life.
Adding to the peril, authorities uncovered a disturbing arsenal within the home: pipe bombs, grenades, and Molotov cocktails. The discovery transformed the scene into an exceptionally hazardous environment, requiring the immediate response of the Stamford Police bomb squad.
Police Chief Timothy Shaw described the incident as “extremely dangerous,” lamenting the tragic loss of two lives. He also praised the coordinated efforts of local, state, and federal agencies, including the firefighters who stood ready to assist.
Court records reveal a financial struggle at the heart of the ordeal. A bank had initiated foreclosure proceedings in April, demanding the occupants vacate the property due to unpaid mortgage payments. A judge had granted an eviction order last month, even offering a final opportunity to rectify the situation.
The identity of the deceased individual found within the home, and the cause of their death, remain under investigation. Simultaneously, the state inspector general’s office is conducting a thorough review of the officers’ use of force during the prolonged standoff.
The investigation continues, seeking to unravel the complex chain of events that culminated in this devastating outcome and to understand the full scope of the tragedy that unfolded on Oaklawn Avenue.
