A convicted rapist, currently serving a prison sentence in the UK, now faces potential extradition to Kosovo. The case rests with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who must decide whether to send the man back to face further charges.
The Albanian national is wanted in connection with a 2017 armed robbery targeting the Jashari family in the village of Havjali. Authorities allege he entered their home and stole 1,500 euros, US dollars, identification, a gold coin, and a smartphone.
During the alleged robbery, the suspect is believed to have been armed with a firearm, or a convincing imitation. Kosovo has issued a warrant, and the UK, bound by a treaty requiring ‘prima facie’ evidence, has arrested the man under the Extradition Act.
This extradition request comes as the man, identified as Bujar Korqa, is already imprisoned for a horrific crime committed in east London. He and an accomplice, Bujar Jashari, were sentenced earlier this year for the rape of a woman.
The attack occurred in Hornchurch town centre, where the victim became separated from her friends. Korqa and Jashari forced her into a vehicle, where one man sexually assaulted her while the other filmed the ordeal on a mobile phone.
Investigators were aided by staff at the venue, and further inquiries revealed the pair had been observed approaching other women prior to the assault. The bravery of the victim was crucial in bringing these predatory offenders to justice.
Detective Sergeant Charlie Yexley emphasized the seriousness of the case, stating that the investigation likely prevented further offenses. He also urged other victims of sexual assault to come forward, seeking support and ensuring their safety.
The sentencing of Korqa and Jashari was a testament to diligent police work and the courage of the survivor. Now, Korqa faces the possibility of answering for a separate crime committed years before, across international borders.
The Home Secretary’s decision will weigh the evidence presented by Kosovo against the principles of justice and international cooperation. The outcome will determine whether Korqa will face trial for the alleged armed robbery in his homeland.
