LONDON'S LAST ICON: They're DESTROYING History!

LONDON'S LAST ICON: They're DESTROYING History!

The Genesis Cinema, a haven for film lovers in London’s Mile End, is facing an unthinkable fate. Classic movie posters adorn the brick walls, film club leaflets scatter the bar – a vibrant space steeped in cinematic history, now teetering on the brink.

Owner Tyrone Walker-Hebborn has watched helplessly as a series of relentless challenges – lockdowns, the cost-of-living crisis, and the Hollywood strikes – derailed the cinema’s most promising years. It’s been a constant barrage, he says, with even the simple cost of popcorn tripling while raising ticket prices meant risking everything.

Desperate to save his beloved venue, Tyrone devised a bold plan: build student accommodation above the cinema. The income generated would secure the future of the screens below, a lifeline thrown to a sinking ship. But Tower Hamlets Council intervened, prioritizing council housing over the preservation of a cultural landmark.

This isn’t just a business for Tyrone; it’s deeply personal. The building itself has been a cornerstone of the community for 170 years, evolving from a public house and music hall to a theatre where a young Charlie Chaplin first captivated audiences. His family’s story is woven into the very fabric of the place.

He’s remortgaged his home, downsized his life, all in a desperate attempt to keep the Genesis alive. He recalls bringing his father to repair a leaky roof, only to uncover a hidden memory – the spot where his parents first courted. “No one wants to save this more than me,” he insists, his voice thick with emotion.

A surge in ticket sales during the “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” phenomenon offered a fleeting moment of hope, but relying on blockbuster hits is a precarious strategy. Tyrone realized a fundamental change was necessary, a way to ensure long-term survival.

The proposed plan wasn’t about erasing the cinema’s identity, but evolving it. The iconic facade, the bright lights, the welcoming foyer – all would remain. The cinema would simply move downstairs, becoming a four-screen, 447-seat venue nestled beneath hundreds of student rooms.

Building 250-300 student bedrooms, specifically catering to nearby Queen Mary University, would generate the crucial income needed to sustain the cinema. The design prioritized preserving the building’s character, ensuring the Genesis would continue to shine as a cultural beacon.

But last week, the council delivered a crushing blow, voting to reject the plans. Planning officers cited the “loss of an important cultural venue” and concerns about overdevelopment and insufficient affordable housing. They argued the land should be used “responsibly,” prioritizing housing over heritage.

Tyrone now faces a heartbreaking reality: unless a viable alternative emerges, the community may have to say goodbye to the Genesis. He’s explored every option – mini golf, bowling alleys – but nothing offers the financial stability needed to keep the screens lit. The future hangs in the balance.

The council maintains its decision, stating the development would “harm the setting of adjacent listed buildings” and “affect the amenity of adjacent residential properties.” But for Tyrone, and for the countless film lovers who cherish the Genesis, it feels like a devastating loss – a cultural treasure slipping away.
