A wave of relief is spreading through West Virginia as news arrives of Andrew Wolfe’s slow but steady recovery. The 24-year-old National Guardsman, injured in a shooting in Washington, D.C. last week, is beginning to show signs of returning to himself, according to his parents.
Governor Patrick Morrisey shared the hopeful update Friday evening, just before a prayer vigil held in Wolfe’s honor at his alma mater, Musselman High School. The governor relayed the family’s message: Wolfe’s head wound is gradually healing, and his appearance is improving.
The family anticipates Wolfe will remain in acute care for another two to three weeks, but remains optimistic about his progress. A collective plea for continued prayers echoes across West Virginia and the nation, a testament to the widespread concern for the young Guardsman.
The vigil itself began with a somber moment of silence, remembering fellow National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom, tragically lost in the same shooting. Beckstrom, just 20 years old, was a stark reminder of the cost of the violence.
Governor Morrisey addressed the community, offering words of support and solidarity. “You are not alone,” he stated, emphasizing the unity of South Berkeley, the entire state, and the country in their prayers for Wolfe’s full recovery.
Attorney General Pam Bondi, during a television appearance, described Wolfe’s condition as nothing short of a “miracle.” She recounted meeting with his mother, Melody, and father, Jason, and learning about his close-knit family – a sister, a brother, and an eight-month-old niece, all present at his bedside.
Bondi shared a powerful moment witnessed firsthand: a room full of doctors confirming the absence of blood clots after an angiogram. Wolfe’s mother, from the very beginning, had declared her unwavering belief in his recovery, and now, against all odds, he was able to open both eyes.
The alleged shooter has been identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national. He is currently facing serious charges, including first-degree murder and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed, as the legal process unfolds.
