HILL COUNTRY HORROR: 911 Calls Uncover Desperate Final Moments

Five months after the devastating Texas Hill Country floods, newly released 911 calls paint a harrowing picture of chaos and desperation. The recordings reveal a night of escalating panic as residents faced a relentless surge of water, their voices filled with fear and urgent pleas for rescue.

Dispatchers, overwhelmed by the sheer volume of calls – over 400 in total – struggled to manage the unfolding crisis. Callers reported being trapped in their homes, summer camp cabins, and even clinging to trees, their situations rapidly deteriorating with each passing moment.

One caller, a resident near Camp Mystic, described a scene of heartbreaking urgency: “We’re okay, but we live about a mile down the road… we’ve already got two little girls who have come down the river.” The caller expressed deep concern for others still missing, swept away by the unforgiving current.

Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp, suffered unimaginable loss that night. Twenty-five young campers and two counselors perished in the floodwaters. The camp’s director, Dick Eastland, tragically lost his life attempting to save those in his care.

Dick Eastland’s son, Britt, co-director of Camp Mystic, frantically contacted 911, requesting the National Guard. He reported as many as 40 people were unaccounted for, a chilling indication of the scale of the disaster.

At nearby Camp La Junta, a counselor’s call captured the terrifying speed of the rising waters. “Water is filling the cabin super fast,” she reported, her words punctuated by the screams of campers in the background. Fortunately, everyone at Camp La Junta was eventually rescued.

Another woman’s voice trembled with fear as she described being trapped with two elderly individuals. “We can’t get out,” she pleaded, her desperation palpable. “Please help us, we’re scared.”

The calls revealed a landscape transformed into a terrifying waterway. One caller reported seeing people floating past, screaming for help, while others desperately sought refuge in attics and on rooftops, praying for rescue from above. “People are in their attics and on their roofs… can anyone get to us with a helicopter?”

Even first responders found themselves in peril. Bradley Perry, a firefighter, calmly reported to a dispatcher that the tree he was sheltering in was beginning to fall. He then delivered the devastating news that he had witnessed his wife, Tina, and their RV being swept away by the flood.

Tragically, Bradley Perry did not survive. His wife, however, was later found alive, clinging to a tree – a testament to resilience amidst unimaginable loss. The floods claimed the lives of over 130 people, leaving a community forever scarred by the night’s devastation.

These 911 calls serve as a stark reminder of the raw power of nature and the courage displayed by both those who desperately sought help and those who risked their lives to provide it.
