The arrest of Bonnie Blue, a content creator known for her work on an adult platform, in Bali has exposed a precarious reality for those in the sex work industry who navigate international travel. While Indonesian authorities remain tight-lipped about the specifics, the case has ignited concerns about the risks faced when crossing borders with work that is considered illegal in some countries.
Blue, whose legal name is Tia Billinger, was taken into custody alongside 17 male tourists and 15 Australians last Friday. All but Blue have since been released, suspected of violating Indonesia’s stringent anti-pornography laws. If convicted, she could face a lengthy prison sentence – up to 15 years – and substantial fines reaching approximately $541,000.
The items seized during the arrest paint a stark picture: professional video equipment, contraceptives, and even erectile dysfunction medication. Perhaps most telling was a vehicle emblazoned with the words “Bonnie Blue’s BangBus,” suggesting a clear intent to produce and distribute adult content. Authorities also confiscated the contents of her Instagram account, alleging evidence of soliciting individuals, including those recently out of school, for explicit material.
The situation has resonated with others in the adult entertainment industry, prompting one creator to share her own experiences with international travel and detention. Sarah Button, an adult content creator, revealed she has been detained in three separate countries, though not always for reasons directly related to her profession.
Button recounted a six-hour detention at Los Angeles International Airport, where she was denied access to her phone and contact with her travel companions, with no explanation offered for the hold. Her boyfriend also faced similar scrutiny at the same airport, coinciding with his appearance in her content. A layover in Fiji resulted in the confiscation of seven kilograms of adult toys, while another stop in Abu Dhabi led to a ban from the United Arab Emirates.
The incident in Abu Dhabi was particularly unsettling. Button and a friend were detained for hours, surrounded by armed security, simply for possessing an adult toy and wearing tights. She was reportedly offered a chance to leave if she abandoned her friend, a proposition she refused, ultimately resulting in a lifetime ban from the UAE.
These experiences have instilled a constant sense of anxiety when traveling. Button described bracing herself for potential detention during a recent trip to Antarctica, fearing recognition based on her online work. Even a seemingly safe trip to Europe with her grandmother was shadowed by worry.
Button wasn’t surprised by Blue’s arrest, predicting a rise in similar cases. Many of her colleagues now avoid traveling to the United States altogether, fearing potential detainment. She argues it’s unfair that individuals running legitimate businesses and paying taxes should live with such constant apprehension.
Blue initially gained notoriety for a documentary detailing her attempt to have sex with over one thousand men within a single day – a feat she reportedly achieved with 1,057 partners in just 12 hours. Now, her story serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the vulnerabilities faced by those working in the adult entertainment industry when venturing across international borders.
