A vacation meant to create cherished memories dissolved into a nightmare aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise last December. Michael Virgil, a 35-year-old father, tragically died after an incident that began with an alarming number of alcoholic beverages served at a shipboard bar.
According to a wrongful death lawsuit, Virgil consumed a staggering 33 drinks throughout the day. This excessive consumption reportedly fueled increasingly erratic and aggressive behavior, culminating in a violent outburst where he threatened crew members and struggled to locate his cabin.
Security personnel intervened, attempting to subdue Virgil. The lawsuit alleges a disturbing escalation of force, claiming crew members tackled him before administering the powerful sedative Haloperidol and deploying pepper spray.
The official autopsy determined Virgil’s death to be a homicide, citing “significant hypoxia and impaired ventilation, respiratory failure, cardiovascular instability and ultimately cardiopulmonary arrest” as the cause. His blood alcohol level registered more than twice the legal driving limit, between 0.182 and 0.186 percent.
Virgil’s fiancée, Connie Aguilar, was traveling with him and their seven-year-old son, who has autism. She witnessed the horrifying ordeal and desperately pleaded with cruise officials to return to port in Long Beach, California, but her requests were denied.
The family’s attorney alleges a shocking disregard for human decency, claiming the cruise line continued its voyage for days with Virgil’s body stored in a refrigerator. This detail paints a grim picture of the aftermath of the incident and the alleged handling of Virgil’s remains.
While the autopsy report indicated Virgil’s blood alcohol content, though high, wasn’t immediately lethal on its own, the combination of intoxication and the alleged forceful restraint and medication appears to have had devastating consequences.
Security footage reportedly captured Virgil’s escalating distress, showing him violently attempting to breach a cabin door, kicking it repeatedly with steel-toed boots and repeatedly striking his head against it before being restrained by security.
