A vacation meant to create cherished memories dissolved into a nightmare aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise last December. Michael Virgil, a 35-year-old father, tragically died after an incident that began with an alarming number of alcoholic beverages served at a shipboard bar.
According to a wrongful death lawsuit, Virgil consumed a staggering 33 drinks throughout the day. This excessive consumption reportedly fueled increasingly erratic behavior, culminating in a violent outburst where he threatened crew members and struggled to locate his cabin.
Security personnel intervened, attempting to subdue Virgil. The lawsuit alleges a forceful takedown, followed by the administration of the powerful sedative Haloperidol and the use of pepper spray in an effort to control him.
The official autopsy determined Virgil’s death to be a homicide, citing “significant hypoxia and impaired ventilation” as key factors. His body ultimately succumbed to respiratory and cardiovascular failure, a devastating end to a day that spiraled out of control.
An autopsy report revealed Virgil’s blood alcohol content reached between 0.182 and 0.186 percent – more than double the legal limit for driving. Despite this elevated level, authorities noted it wasn’t independently lethal, suggesting other factors contributed to the fatal outcome.
Disturbing video footage surfaced, depicting Virgil aggressively attempting to breach a cabin door, repeatedly kicking it with steel-toed boots and violently striking his head against the wood. The footage underscores the intensity of his state before security intervened.
The aftermath of the incident was compounded by grief and frustration for Virgil’s fiancée, Connie Aguilar. Traveling with their seven-year-old son, who has autism, Aguilar desperately pleaded with cruise officials to return to port in Long Beach, California.
Her requests were denied. Aguilar’s attorney claims the cruise line continued its voyage for multiple days with Virgil’s body reportedly being stored in a refrigerator, a chilling detail that has intensified the family’s anguish and legal battle.
The family is now seeking justice, questioning the cruise line’s responsibility in serving an excessive amount of alcohol and the methods used by security personnel in their attempt to restrain a clearly intoxicated passenger.
