A wave of grief and fury culminated in a shocking courtroom confrontation this week. Daniel Ashby, a 36-year-old man from Aurora, Colorado, allegedly attacked a defense attorney, driven to the edge by the case of his nephew’s accused killer.
The incident unfolded inside the Arapahoe County Courthouse in Littleton, during a hearing for 19-year-old Christopher Ramirez-Rodriguez. Ramirez-Rodriguez is accused of running a red light in July, a reckless act that tragically ended the life of Ashby’s 12-year-old nephew.
The young boy was simply crossing the street on his electric scooter when the collision occurred, shattering a family and igniting a desperate search for accountability. Ramirez-Rodriguez initially faced a charge of careless driving resulting in death, a designation that fueled the Ashby family’s growing frustration.
During the hearing, Ashby reportedly became increasingly agitated, attempting to get closer to the defendant. When 69-year-old defense lawyer H. Michael Steinberg attempted to block his path, the situation escalated with terrifying speed.
Witnesses say Ashby then executed what has been described as an MMA-style takedown, body slamming Steinberg and rendering him unconscious. The force of the attack resulted in a fractured spine for the attorney, a devastating injury with long-term consequences.
Steinberg, in a message relayed from the hospital, revealed the extent of his injuries, detailing a shattered pelvis in addition to the spinal fracture and describing the pain as “serious.” Emergency surgery was scheduled in an attempt to repair the damage.
Authorities swiftly arrested Ashby, charging him with second-degree assault and setting his bond at $75,000. He now awaits legal proceedings, facing the consequences of his actions within the very system he seemingly lost faith in.
