SCAM ALERT: Local Man EXPOSED in $100K Gift Card Heist!

SCAM ALERT: Local Man EXPOSED in $100K Gift Card Heist!

A sophisticated scheme targeting unsuspecting shoppers has been disrupted with the arrest of a 39-year-old man from Markham. Police in Kitchener uncovered a network of fraudulent gift cards, revealing a calculated effort to deceive customers and steal thousands of dollars.

The incident unfolded Friday afternoon as officers patrolled near retail areas. A keen observation led them to witness a man actively concealing gift cards, subtly swapping genuine cards for meticulously altered fakes before exiting a store on Highland Rd. W.

Acting swiftly, officers apprehended the suspect. A search revealed a staggering haul: over 550 gift cards from a variety of popular retailers. The potential value of these cards, had they been activated, ranged from $27,500 to a staggering $133,000.

Waterloo Regional Police said officers seized more than 550 gift cards from multiple retailers in Kitchener on Friday, Dec. 12, 2025.

Among the seized cards were those from well-known brands like The Home Depot, Lululemon, and Amazon, highlighting the broad scope of the alleged fraud. The suspect now faces charges of theft under $5,000 and fraud exceeding $5,000.

This arrest isn’t an isolated incident. Just last week, a 51-year-old man from Toronto was arrested in Hamilton on similar charges, accused of tampering with gift cards and possessing stolen property.

Investigators in Hamilton discovered the suspect had replaced barcodes on legitimate cards with those linked to cards he already controlled, effectively diverting funds to his own accounts. A traffic stop led to the seizure of over 250 compromised gift cards.

Authorities are urging consumers to exercise extreme caution when purchasing gift cards. Thoroughly inspect packaging for any signs of tampering, ensuring the PIN remains concealed and uncompromised.

Experts recommend purchasing gift cards only from reputable sources and diligently retaining your receipt. If you suspect a gift card has been tampered with, immediately report it to the retailer to prevent potential financial loss.
