A family’s dream trip to London turned into a nightmare in Leicester Square when an 11-year-old girl was brutally attacked as she left a Lego store with her mother. The pair were visiting from Australia, eager to experience the excitement of a Taylor Swift concert, unaware of the horror that awaited them.
Ioan Pintaru, a 33-year-old man, suddenly lunged at the girl, seizing her in a headlock and repeatedly stabbing her in the face, neck, and shoulder with a kitchen knife. The young victim, caught completely off guard, instantly believed she was going to die, overwhelmed by terror and pain.
The girl’s mother watched in absolute horror as the attack unfolded, convinced she was witnessing her daughter’s murder. The agonizing moment is now replayed endlessly in her mind, a trauma that will never fully fade. Her desperate attempts to intervene were met with a terrifying display of violence.
The prosecutor described how the girl recalled a sudden impact from behind, followed by the crushing weight of her attacker. She felt the blade pierce her skin and the warm rush of blood as it streamed down her face. Every second felt like an eternity, filled with unimaginable fear.
Witnesses bravely intervened, including a security guard named Abdullah who wrestled the knife from Pintaru’s grasp, kicking it away before pinning him down with the help of others. A nurse passing by immediately provided crucial first aid, stemming the bleeding until police arrived.
While the girl has physically recovered from her wounds, the psychological scars run deep. She is acutely aware of her scars and understands the trauma will impact her life forever. The invisible wounds are a constant reminder of the day her childhood innocence was shattered.
Pintaru, during police questioning, became visibly distressed at the thought of confronting the extent of his actions. He broke down in tears and refused to view CCTV footage of the attack or images of the girl’s injuries. His behavior suggested a profound disconnect from the reality of his violence.
The court learned Pintaru had a history of mental health issues, having previously been admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Romania. Following the attack, he claimed he hadn’t intended to harm anyone but believed he was being followed and that imprisonment was his only escape.
Ioan Pintaru has now been detained indefinitely in a secure hospital under a Section 37 and Section 41 order of the Mental Health Act. The judge acknowledged the lasting trauma inflicted upon the victim and her family, recognizing the profound and enduring consequences of this senseless act of violence.
