A construction worker was injured Thursday morning at the site of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT’s western extension, triggering a swift response from emergency services.
Police and firefighters raced to the area of Eglinton Avenue West and Jane Street shortly after 10:10 a.m., responding to reports of an industrial accident. Paramedics immediately transported the injured man to hospital under emergency conditions, raising initial concerns about the severity of his condition.
Thankfully, authorities later confirmed the worker’s injuries were not life-threatening. While a collective sigh of relief swept through those aware of the incident, a thorough investigation was immediately launched to determine the cause.
The transit agency overseeing the massive project confirmed their awareness of the accident and expressed concern for the injured worker and his family. An internal review is underway, focusing on safety protocols and potential contributing factors.
Ontario’s Ministry of Labour has also dispatched an inspector to the site. Their independent investigation will run parallel to the transit agency’s, aiming to uncover the precise sequence of events that led to the injury and prevent future occurrences.
The western extension of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT is a significant undertaking, designed to connect the Mount Dennis transit hub with Renforth Drive. Ultimately, the line is planned to reach even further, extending service all the way to Toronto Pearson International Airport.
For now, the focus remains on the worker’s recovery and a meticulous examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident, underscoring the inherent risks within large-scale construction projects.
