The original gateway to handheld PC gaming is closing. Valve has quietly ceased production of the Steam Deck LCD, the model that first brought the revolutionary device to a wider audience.
The news surfaced during the Steam Winter Sale, with a simple notice appearing on the product page. Once the remaining inventory vanished, the LCD version would be gone for good – and it has now sold out, marking the end of an era.
Launched in 2022, the LCD Steam Deck wasn’t just a product; it was a statement. Priced at $399, it democratized access to a powerful, portable gaming experience, challenging established norms and igniting a new wave of handheld gaming PCs.
Now, the Steam Deck OLED stands as the sole offering from Valve. While representing a price increase to $549, the OLED model delivers significant improvements, boasting a vibrant new display and substantially extended battery life.
Valve has remained tight-lipped about the specific reasons for discontinuing the LCD model. However, industry speculation points to increasing component costs, particularly for essential elements like memory and storage, making the lower price point unsustainable.
Despite the end of the LCD, the future of the Steam Deck isn’t necessarily stagnant. Valve has indicated that a true “Steam Deck 2” remains a distant prospect, suggesting ongoing refinement and optimization of the current platform are the immediate focus.
