A desperate search spanning two cities ended Friday with the arrest of Michael Waterman, 44, in Peterborough. He was taken into custody, not for the stabbing in Oshawa that initially put him on the run, but for a separate, earlier homicide.
Waterman was located at a residence near Dalhousie and Alymer Streets. According to police reports, an officer announced his presence, and Waterman calmly exited the home, surrendering without incident. He now faces a second-degree murder charge in connection with a December 6th death in Peterborough.
The arrest brings a chilling connection to a fatal stabbing in Oshawa just days prior. On Tuesday, Durham Regional Police responded to a call near Park Road South and John Street, finding 44-year-old Jeremy Russell suffering from life-threatening stab wounds. Russell tragically succumbed to his injuries at a Toronto trauma centre, marking Durham’s ninth homicide of the year.
Investigators quickly identified Waterman as a suspect in Russell’s death, adding a second-degree murder charge to his growing list of accusations. Police confirmed that all three men – Russell, Waterman, and another suspect already in custody, Nicholas Robbins – were known to each other, hinting at a complex and potentially personal motive.
The Peterborough homicide Waterman is now charged with involved a 33-year-old man found with severe head injuries in an apartment building on Brock Street. He died at the scene, prompting an investigation that initially named Waterman as one of three suspects. Two others, Peter Pople and Kaya Coughlin, were arrested earlier this month in connection with the case.
Meanwhile, in Toronto, a separate act of violence unfolded Friday morning. A 36-year-old man, Loewen Wolfe, is facing a barrage of charges after allegedly setting a tent and mattress ablaze near Yonge and Charles Streets. The fire critically injured the occupant, who was pulled from the flames and rushed to hospital.
Police allege Wolfe deliberately ignited the fire, even adding items to accelerate the blaze. He is charged with mischief endangering life, arson, and multiple counts related to causing bodily harm and violating probation. The incident underscores a disturbing pattern of escalating violence across the region.
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the Toronto arson to come forward, offering avenues for anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers. The investigations into both the Oshawa stabbing and the Peterborough homicide remain ongoing, as detectives piece together the events that led to these tragic outcomes.
