PESO PLUMMET IMMINENT: Traders Brace for Impact!

The Philippine peso is poised for a quiet week against the US dollar, a stillness expected to settle over markets dampened by the holiday season and a scarcity of compelling economic news. Trading volume is predicted to remain low as the year draws to a close, creating a period of cautious observation for currency markets.

The peso experienced a slight rally on Friday, gaining 14 centavos to reach P58.71 per dollar – a modest improvement from Tuesday’s close of P58.85. However, when viewed across the entire week, the peso experienced a fractional decline of one centavo from its position on December 19th.

Analysts suggest a surge in remittances from overseas Filipino workers likely provided a boost to the peso on Friday. The approaching holidays traditionally see increased financial flows as workers convert dollars to pesos to fund celebrations and gift-giving, creating a seasonal upward pressure on the local currency.

Philippine financial markets will observe a temporary pause, closing on December 30th, 31st, and January 1st for Rizal Day and New Year’s Day. Trading will resume on January 2nd, marking a return to activity after the extended break.

Globally, the US dollar index saw a slight increase of 0.08% on Friday, reaching 98.03, according to Reuters. Meanwhile, the Japanese yen weakened as investors closely monitored for potential government intervention aimed at stabilizing its value.

Market participants describe a lack of significant drivers influencing currency movements. With limited economic data and the year-end lull, trading is expected to remain within a narrow range, a consolidation likely to persist throughout the shortened week.

Looking ahead to Monday, the final trading day of the year, analysts predict the peso could fluctuate between P58.55 and P58.85. For the entire week, a broader trading range of P58.50 to P58.95 is anticipated, with some forecasting a potential reach as high as P59 against the dollar.
