They represent a chilling shift, a “new normal” of antisemitic violence gripping the Western world over the past two years. A pattern is emerging, and ignoring it carries a grave risk.
Since October 7th, 2023, the surge in antisemitism, particularly fueled by Islamist ideologies, has been documented by researchers and Jewish organizations. Yet, despite mounting evidence, decisive action to safeguard Jewish lives has been tragically insufficient. History offers a stark warning: when one group is targeted by extremism, others inevitably follow.
The Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th, 2023, was a brutal awakening. Approximately 1,200 innocent people were murdered, and 251 were taken hostage. It took 738 agonizing days to secure the release of the living hostages, but one remains lost, a deceased Israeli still held in Gaza.
In the immediate aftermath, a wave of antisemitism erupted globally, instigated by Islamists and their supporters, often with backing from Iran. Israel was falsely blamed for the atrocities committed against it, unleashing a torrent of anti-Israel and antisemitic rhetoric. This hateful speech spilled onto campuses, into the streets, and across social media, actively inciting violence.
Chants like “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” – officially condemned as antisemitic by the U.S. House of Representatives – and “globalize the intifada,” a call for worldwide violence against Israelis and Jews, gained disturbing traction. These aren’t just words; they are fueling a dangerous reality.
The statistics paint a grim picture. Jewish organizations tracking antisemitic incidents have reported a staggering 340% increase worldwide between 2022 and 2024. This isn’t simply a rise in hateful rhetoric; it’s a quantifiable escalation of violence and intimidation.
The most alarming aspect isn’t just the antisemitism itself, but the growing tolerance and normalization of it within Western societies and even by their governments. The problem extends beyond Islamist extremism. Left-wing and right-wing extremists, despite their ideological differences, share a common thread: antisemitism.
This convergence of hatred is a dangerous recipe for disaster. A shared animosity towards Jews unites disparate extremist groups, a critical warning sign that Western governments are currently failing to recognize. This unifying hatred poses a threat to the stability of society as a whole.
Holding social media platforms accountable is a crucial first step. These platforms have become echo chambers for hatred, influencing individuals of all ages. Legislation like the European Union’s Digital Services Act offers a framework, but it requires robust enforcement, increased resources, and specialized training for those tasked with protecting citizens.
Western leaders must also actively engage with moderate Muslim communities, encouraging them to condemn radical elements within their faith and proactively work to prevent violence. The vast majority of Muslims are peaceful, and their voices are essential in countering extremist ideologies. Almost 67,000 Islamist terrorist attacks have occurred worldwide between 1979 and 2024, and lasting peace requires the active participation of moderate Muslims.
For Jews around the world, the fear is palpable, a haunting echo of history. Islamist-inspired antisemitism is a looming threat, a dark fin circling beneath the surface. It’s no longer enough to simply acknowledge the danger; Western leaders must confront it directly.
Failure to act swiftly and decisively will have devastating consequences. The danger lurking beneath the surface won’t remain hidden forever, and ultimately, it will come for everyone.
