HISTORY SHATTERED: NYC Mayor to Take Oath on the QURAN!

HISTORY SHATTERED: NYC Mayor to Take Oath on the QURAN!

A new chapter for New York City begins on New Year’s Day, steeped in history and signaling a dramatic shift in leadership. Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will take his oath of office using the Quran, a first for the city and a powerful symbol of his identity and beliefs.

The 34-year-old, born in Uganda, embodies a political awakening. His journey to becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor is a testament to a campaign fueled by progressive ideals and a promise of radical change for New Yorkers.

The initial swearing-in will be a deeply intimate affair, held at midnight within the echoing chambers of Old City Hall Station – a decommissioned subway station frozen in time. This private ceremony precedes a public inauguration the following afternoon on the steps of City Hall.

Senator Bernie Sanders will administer the public oath, adding another layer of progressive weight to the momentous occasion. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is slated to deliver opening remarks, setting the stage for a new era in city governance.

Mamdani’s ascent to power followed a stunning victory over established figures, including former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. His platform centered on tackling affordability, proposing policies like rent freezes, city-run grocery stores, and universal access to buses and childcare.

His campaign wasn’t without friction. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer notably withheld an endorsement, a decision potentially linked to Mamdani’s arrest during a protest against the war in Gaza outside Schumer’s home.

Mamdani has been outspoken in his criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza, characterizing the military campaign as “genocide” and questioning the very definition of Israel as a Jewish state. These views, alongside his past activism, have drawn intense scrutiny.

During his college years at Bowdoin, he founded the Students for Justice in Palestine chapter, a formative experience that shaped his political consciousness and advocacy.

Despite pledges to protect Jewish New Yorkers, his recent appointment of Ramzi Kassem as the city’s next top attorney has ignited controversy. Kassem previously defended Ahmed al-Darbi, convicted in connection with a deadly al Qaeda bombing, and Mahmoud Khalil, facing accusations of leading antisemitic demonstrations.

Mamdani defended the appointment, stating Kassem brings “remarkable experience and a commitment to defending those too often abandoned by our legal system.” This decision underscores a commitment to challenging conventional legal boundaries and prioritizing defense for the marginalized.

The selection of these Qurans is also deeply symbolic. He will use two family heirlooms, connecting him to his personal faith and heritage, alongside a Quran once owned by Arturo Schomburg, a pivotal figure in the Harlem Renaissance and a champion of Black culture.

As New York City stands on the precipice of change, the inauguration marks not just a transfer of power, but a bold statement about the city’s evolving identity and its embrace of a new, and potentially transformative, vision for the future.
