SANDERS SHOCKS FANS: Mittens GONE as He Backs Radical New NYC Mayor!

Senator Bernie Sanders presided over the swearing-in of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a moment keenly observed not for political pronouncements, but for what was missing: the mittens. The now-iconic, handmade brown mittens that launched a thousand memes were absent from the Vermont senator’s ensemble, marking a distinct shift from the image that captivated the world during the 2021 presidential inauguration.

Mamdani, who openly identifies as a democratic socialist, echoed Sanders’ political leanings in his inaugural address. He boldly declared his intention to “govern as a democratic socialist,” signaling a potential new direction for New York City’s leadership and resonating with a crowd eager for progressive change.

Sanders’ speech preceding the oath of office wasn’t a mere formality. He passionately lauded Mamdani’s campaign, framing the election as a powerful rebuke of entrenched political forces. He spoke of a grassroots movement that dared to challenge not only the established Democratic and Republican parties, but also the influence of immense wealth and power.

He fiercely defended Mamdani’s policy proposals – affordable housing, free childcare, free public transportation, and increased taxes on the wealthy – against accusations of being “radical” or even “communistic.” Sanders argued these weren’t extreme ideas, but essential necessities for a nation possessing unparalleled resources.

As Sanders administered the oath shortly after 2:40 p.m., the crowd erupted in chants of “Zohran,” a testament to the energy and enthusiasm surrounding the new mayor. The moment solidified a clear mandate for bold, progressive policies within the city.

Mamdani, in turn, pledged to pursue an ambitious agenda, including rent freezes, universal childcare, free buses, and higher taxes on New York’s wealthiest residents. He promised a City Hall that would govern “expansively and audaciously,” setting a high bar for his administration.

The 2021 inauguration saw Sanders become an unlikely internet sensation. A simple photograph of him, bundled against the cold and arms crossed, became a cultural touchstone, spawning countless memes, merchandise, and even charitable fundraising initiatives.

This time, however, Sanders adopted a more understated appearance, opting for standard winter gloves, a blue beanie, and a green coat. He sat patiently, legs crossed, during a performance of “Bread and Roses,” a song often associated with socialist movements, a quiet observer amidst the celebratory atmosphere.

The mittens themselves were a product of Vermont schoolteacher Jen Ellis’s craft, and their unexpected fame led to an extraordinary outpouring of generosity. Ellis revealed she was able to donate approximately $2 million to Vermont charities through mitten-related fundraising, a remarkable consequence of a single, viral image.
