A shadow has fallen over the magic of Disney World. Authorities are currently investigating a death at Disney Springs, the resort’s vibrant shopping and dining district, as a possible suicide – the latest in a string of tragedies to grip the beloved theme park.
Deputies responded to the Orange Garage within Disney Springs late Friday evening, discovering a deceased man. Details remain scarce as the investigation unfolds, but the incident adds to a growing sense of unease surrounding the resort.
This potential suicide marks the sixth reported death at Disney World or its affiliated properties in recent months. Between October and November, five separate incidents cast a pall over the normally joyful atmosphere, including two previously confirmed suicides.
On November 8th, a guest was pronounced dead at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa. The circumstances surrounding this death are still under investigation, adding to the mounting concerns.
Just weeks prior, on October 14th, the Disney community mourned the loss of Summer Equitz, a 31-year-old superfan. She was found deceased at the Contemporary Resort after disappearing from her home in Illinois, her death ruled an apparent suicide.
The tragedies continued to unfold with alarming frequency. Days later, a man in his 60s succumbed to a pre-existing medical condition while at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground on October 21st.
Then, on October 23rd, the Contemporary Resort was again the site of heartbreak. Matthew Alec Cohn, a 28-year-old aspiring football referee, tragically leapt from the 12th floor of the hotel, also believed to be a suicide.
November brought another loss, with a woman in her 40s found unresponsive at Disney’s Pop Century Resort on November 2nd. Despite efforts, she was later pronounced dead.
The sorrow isn’t confined to Florida. At Disneyland in California, a visitor in her 60s was found unresponsive after riding the Haunted Mansion in October. The cause of death is still being determined.
Even beyond the parks, tragedy struck this year. In June, a mother faced investigation after her daughter fell into the ocean from a Disney Cruise ship, a harrowing incident stemming from a photograph taken near a ship window.
These events have left many questioning the emotional weight carried by a place designed for happiness, and the need for increased support and awareness surrounding mental health, even within the most magical of places.
