A Sunday afternoon in Toronto was shattered by a violent series of events, beginning with a reported stabbing near Bellevue Avenue and College Street. Police responded to the scene just before 12:55 p.m., finding a female victim suffering from injuries.
The victim received immediate medical attention and was transported to a local hospital, thankfully with non-life-threatening wounds. However, the assailant didn’t remain at the scene, immediately fleeing and initiating a desperate pursuit.
The search led officers west, towards the Lakeshore Boulevard and Remembrance Drive area. There, the suspect made a shocking decision – plunging into the frigid waters of Lake Ontario in an attempt to evade capture.
Toronto Police’s marine unit swiftly responded to the scene, launching a rescue operation. But the situation escalated dramatically when the suspect, while being apprehended, stabbed a responding officer.
Despite the attack, officers successfully arrested the suspect. The injured officer was also transported to the hospital, receiving treatment for injuries that were, fortunately, not life-threatening.
Meanwhile, in Mississauga, a late-night traffic stop yielded a different kind of danger. Peel Regional Police initiated a stop around 11:50 p.m. on Saturday near Dundas Street and Dixie Road.
The occupants were initially detained under the Cannabis Act, leading to a more thorough search of the vehicle. That search uncovered a loaded, illegal handgun and a magazine filled with ammunition.
Two men now face serious weapons charges as a result of the discovery. Lavone Reynard, 31, of Nova Scotia, and Romaine Cain, 32, of Brampton, are accused of multiple firearm offences, including possession of an altered weapon.
The charges against Reynard include unauthorized possession of a firearm, possessing a loaded prohibited weapon, and driving with cannabis readily available. Cain faces charges related to unauthorized possession and possessing a firearm with an altered serial number.
These incidents underscore a troubling wave of violence across the region, with authorities continuing to investigate a separate deadly shooting in Brampton and an unprovoked stabbing in Mississauga. Anyone with information related to these cases is urged to contact the police.
