POLICE SECRETS EXPOSED: Freemasons BREAK SILENCE!

A shadow of distrust has fallen over the Metropolitan Police, as a new policy compels officers to reveal if they are Freemasons. The move, intended to bolster public confidence, has instead ignited a firestorm of protest from within the ranks, with officers feeling unfairly targeted and their integrity questioned.

The decision stems from a 2021 recommendation by the Daniel Morgan Independent Panel, investigating the unsolved 1987 murder of private detective Daniel Morgan. The panel cited Freemasonry as a persistent source of suspicion, fueling concerns about impartiality in investigations. But for many officers, the policy feels like a punishment for belonging to a centuries-old organization dedicated to charity and moral development.

One long-serving officer, a twelve-year member of the Freemasons, described the policy as “absolutely unfair.” He likened the organization to a social club, questioning why membership in a rugby or golf club wouldn’t warrant similar scrutiny. He fears the policy won’t simply record membership, but actively hinder career advancement, creating a climate of suspicion where dedication and service are overshadowed by association.

The Metropolitan Police currently employs approximately 440 Freemasons, a relatively small number within its 32,135 officers. Nationwide, only around 1200 police officers are members. Yet, the policy’s impact extends beyond those numbers, creating anxiety among officers who fear being penalized for a lawful and, they insist, harmless affiliation.

A stark example of the perceived injustice comes from a letter penned by a veteran officer to the United Grand Lodge of England. He recounted arresting the daughter of a Freemason, only to have her claim her father’s connections would secure her release. They did not. He acted with unwavering impartiality, a testament to his commitment to duty, yet now feels his reputation is tarnished by the new policy.

The officer, who dreamed of a career in policing since childhood, expressed profound disappointment, stating the policy has led him to consider leaving the force altogether. He lamented that his integrity is now implicitly questioned simply because of his membership in an organization focused on ethical conduct and charitable work.

The concern isn’t limited to London. Officers in other regions fear the policy will spread, creating a nationwide chilling effect on Freemasonry within law enforcement. The question looms: at what point does scrutiny of an officer’s personal life become excessive, blurring the lines between legitimate oversight and unwarranted intrusion?

Despite the controversy, many Freemasons emphasize the organization’s benign nature. They describe it as a space for camaraderie, charitable endeavors, and philosophical discussion. The infamous “secret” handshake, they admit, exists, but is easily researched and largely symbolic – a tradition, not a conspiracy.

The Metropolitan Police defends its decision, citing a survey revealing that two-thirds of officers and staff believe Freemasonry compromises perceptions of impartiality and public trust. Commander Simon Messinger stated that public and staff confidence must take precedence over the secrecy of any membership organization, emphasizing the force’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

However, the policy is now facing a legal challenge, and the Metropolitan Police has vowed to defend its position. As the legal battle unfolds, the future of Freemasonry within the police force – and the morale of many dedicated officers – hangs in the balance.
