A shadow of controversy is falling over Seattle’s new mayor, Katie Wilson, as concerns mount regarding her city’s approach to public safety. An internal police email revealed a significant shift in how drug-related offenses are being handled, prioritizing diversion programs over traditional prosecution – a move sparking fierce debate and accusations of sending a dangerously lenient message.
The uproar began with a memo circulated by Police Chief Shon Barnes, detailing guidelines for 2026. It outlined that most cases involving drug possession and use would be directed toward the Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) program, rather than the court system. While officials claim no formal policy change has occurred, critics argue the practical effect is a dramatic softening of enforcement.
The email specifically stated that “all charges related to drug possession and/or drug use will be diverted” to LEAD, based on guidance from the City Attorney’s Office. This directive applies to cases involving user-quantity drugs, leaving prosecution for dealers and those ineligible for the program. Despite this, officers are still expected to make arrests when they have probable cause, particularly when drug use is visible to the public.
Seattle Police Department officials insist that enforcement hasn’t changed, emphasizing that officers continue to make drug-related arrests and departmental policy remains consistent. They clarify that the decision to prosecute ultimately rests with the prosecutors, and officers can collaborate to pursue traditional prosecution when diversion appears ineffective.
Mayor Wilson vehemently denies any shift in policy, stating plainly, “There has been no policy change.” She asserts that her administration remains dedicated to enforcing existing laws in “priority situations” while simultaneously expanding diversion programs like LEAD in areas heavily impacted by drug use, emphasizing a need for urgency and measurable results.
However, skepticism persists. Jason Rantz, a prominent Seattle commentator, argued in a recent opinion piece that diverting cases undermines accountability, regardless of official explanations. He contends that a lack of prosecution sends a clear signal to offenders: public drug use carries minimal consequences.
The criticism isn’t limited to outside voices. Mike Solan, President of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, delivered a scathing critique, warning that the approach outlined in the email jeopardizes public safety and normalizes open drug use. He described the strategy as “suicidal empathy,” predicting a rise in crime and overdose deaths.
Solan revealed a deep-seated distrust among officers regarding the LEAD program itself, stating that some actively avoid making referrals, believing it’s ineffective and driven by ideology rather than genuine accountability. He characterized the decision to refrain from arresting offenders as “horrifically dangerous” and a catalyst for societal decay.
Concerns extend to outreach groups as well. Andrea Suarez, executive director of the nonprofit We Heart Seattle, warned that allowing open drug use to flourish enables addiction and accelerates harm. She argues that consistent enforcement is crucial for motivating individuals to seek treatment, and diversion without consequences fails to disrupt the cycle of drug use.
Despite the mounting criticism, city officials maintain their position. Police will continue to make arrests when justified, and Mayor Wilson reaffirms her commitment to enforcing laws in critical areas while expanding diversion efforts. The debate, however, continues to rage, highlighting a fundamental disagreement over the best path forward for addressing Seattle’s complex public safety challenges.
