GOOGLE UNLEASHES GAMBLING ADS: Prepare for Impact in 2026!

A significant shift is coming to the world of online advertising. Starting January 21, 2026, Google will begin allowing advertisements for a specific type of financial platform: prediction markets, within the United States.

This isn’t a wide-open invitation, however. The change is carefully constrained, applying only to organizations already operating under strict federal oversight. A new, rigorous certification process will also be required before any ads can actually run.

Google defines these permitted “Prediction Markets” as platforms where users can trade contracts tied to the outcomes of real-world events – everything from economic trends and sporting events to current affairs. The core principle is betting on what *will* happen, not what is happening now.

To qualify, advertisers must fall into one of two distinct categories. The first involves companies officially designated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as “Designated Contract Markets.” These are the established players in the exchange-listed event contract space.

The second qualifying group consists of brokerages authorized by the National Futures Association. These firms act as intermediaries, providing users access to the products offered by the DCMs. Essentially, they connect individuals to the larger prediction market ecosystem.

Meeting these regulatory hurdles is only the first step. Google is implementing its own layer of scrutiny, requiring all potential advertisers to apply for and receive direct certification from Google itself before targeting US users.

Google is emphasizing strict compliance. Every advertisement, the product it promotes, and the landing page it directs to must adhere to all applicable local laws, financial regulations, industry standards, and existing Google Ads Policies. The English version of the policy will be the definitive standard for enforcement.

This policy update isn’t appearing in a vacuum. Over recent months, Google has been actively refining its policies around gambling and games, including a reclassification of sweepstakes casino games. This suggests a broader reassessment of how it approaches these evolving digital spaces.

As prediction markets continue to grow in popularity and sophistication, Google’s move signals a growing recognition of their potential – and a commitment to regulating their presence within the advertising landscape.
