A critical security flaw has been quietly patched in the latest versions of Google Chrome. The update, rolling out now for Windows, macOS, and Linux, addresses a high-risk vulnerability discovered within the browser’s WebView component.
The vulnerability, designated CVE-2026-0628, stems from inconsistent enforcement of security policies. This essentially means the browser could be tricked into loading content from untrusted sources, bypassing crucial safeguards designed to protect user data.
Fortunately, Google reports no evidence of this weakness being exploited by attackers in the real world. The issue was brought to their attention by an external security researcher, Gal Weizman, in late November, prompting a swift response from the Chrome security team.
Users typically receive these updates automatically, but you can manually check for the latest version by navigating to Help > About Google Chrome within the browser’s settings. The update also extends to Chrome for Android, ensuring mobile users are equally protected.
The fix isn’t limited to the desktop versions; the Extended Stable Channel for Windows and macOS now incorporates the updated Chromium foundation. Google is already looking ahead, planning the release of Chrome 144 on January 13th, 2026.
This update places pressure on other browsers built on the Chromium engine – like Microsoft Edge and Brave – to implement similar protections. Currently, they remain at the pre-Christmas security level, utilizing Chromium 143.
Vivaldi takes a slightly different approach, bypassing odd Chromium versions like 143 and instead relying on the Extended Stable Channel. Their latest release, version 7.7.3851.66, uses Chromium 142, but an update leveraging the newer Extended Stable Channel is anticipated soon.
Opera One, with its recent update to version 125 based on Chromium 141, has temporarily narrowed the gap. However, Chromium 141 hasn’t received updates from Google since October, and Opera’s beta version, 126, is now incorporating Chromium 142, likely receiving a final update this week.
