A wave of grief and support is sweeping through Nova Scotia following the tragic death of Drew Nickerson, a young teen attacked by dogs while simply enjoying a bike ride. The community is reeling, struggling to comprehend the sudden loss of a vibrant life cut short on a quiet Saturday near Shelburne.
Drew, a Grade 8 student at Shelburne Regional High School, succumbed to his devastating injuries on Monday, leaving behind a heartbroken mother, Dawn Schnare Nickerson. He was known by many as a friend, a passionate outdoorsman, and someone who shared a special bond with his mother through their love of horses.
In the wake of this unimaginable tragedy, a groundswell of compassion has emerged. A campaign was initiated to alleviate the financial strain on Dawn, allowing her to focus solely on healing and grieving during this incredibly difficult time. The response has been overwhelming.
Within just one day, over $76,000 has been contributed, demonstrating the profound impact Drew had on those around him and the community’s desire to offer tangible support. The initial goal of $130,000 reflects the depth of need and the generosity of spirit.
Authorities have now identified the breeds of the dogs involved in the horrific attack. Two were Cane Corsos, known for their large size and protective instincts, and the third was a Rottweiler, another powerful breed. The dogs were immediately euthanized by a veterinarian following the incident.
The RCMP has described the attack as leaving the victim severely mauled. While the immediate danger has been addressed, questions remain regarding potential charges against the dogs’ owners as the investigation continues.
Staff Sergeant Mark MacPherson, commander of the Shelburne District RCMP detachment, expressed the deep sorrow felt by the entire force. “This is an extremely distressing and tragic incident for everyone involved,” he stated, extending heartfelt condolences to Drew’s loved ones.
The loss of Drew has left an unfillable void in the hearts of those who knew him, and the community is united in its grief and determination to support his mother through this devastating ordeal. His memory will undoubtedly live on, a testament to a life lived with passion and kindness.
