DENMARK OUTGUNS CANADA?! U.S. Military SHOCKED.

The idea seemed outlandish at first – a U.S. President openly contemplating the acquisition of Greenland, even by force. But this unsettling moment forces a critical question upon Canada: are we truly prepared for a world where even our closest ally might consider aggressive action?

This isn’t simply about rhetoric; it’s about a stark assessment of military reality. If Canada were to find itself standing alone against the immense power of the American military, how would we fare? A comparison with Denmark, a small social democracy, reveals a sobering truth.

Despite having a population four times larger than Denmark, Canada lags behind in modernizing its armed forces. Denmark, with its six million citizens, has demonstrably more advanced ships, aircraft, tanks, and air defense systems. Their commitment to rapid procurement is a striking contrast to Canada’s decades-long timelines.

A Royal Canadian Navy sailor looks on through heavy fog at the arrival of the Danish warship HDMS (Her Danish Majesty's Ship) Vædderen (F359) during a sailpast at a ceremony marking the start of Fleet Week in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Thursday, June 19, 2025.

Consider the naval landscape. Canada boasts the world’s longest coastline, yet our twelve Halifax-class frigates are aging, with replacements not anticipated until 2040. Denmark, recognizing the need for modernization, is already building replacements for its existing frigates, scheduled for completion over a decade sooner.

The Danish fleet isn’t just newer; it’s smarter. Their warships feature modular designs, allowing for rapid repurposing and re-arming based on evolving threats. This adaptability is a capability entirely absent in the Royal Canadian Navy.

Even our recently acquired patrol vessels fall short. While Canada’s Harry DeWolf-class ships excel at surveillance, they are lightly armed – described by the Navy itself as “all sight and no fight.” Danish patrol vessels, in contrast, carry substantial weapon systems, including guns, missiles, and torpedoes.

Canada’s debate continues over whether to buy more F-35s (pictured) or the Swedish Gripen.

The disparity extends to the skies. The Royal Canadian Air Force continues to rely on 1980s-era F-18s, while Denmark is already integrating cutting-edge F-35s into its fleet. Though vulnerable to supply disruptions in a conflict with the U.S., the Danish aircraft represent a significant technological advantage.

Denmark’s commitment to defense isn’t limited to ships and planes. They are aggressively investing in ground-based air defense systems, including the Ukraine-proven NASAMS 3 and the EUROSAM SAMP/TNG, systems Canada is still years away from fully operationalizing.

On the ground, Denmark has upgraded its tank fleet with advanced Leopard 2A7DKs, surpassing Canada’s existing Leopard 2A4 and 2A6 models. This commitment to modernization extends to their Arctic presence, where the elite Sirius Sledge Patrol conducts continuous, rigorous sovereignty patrols.

Canada, meanwhile, largely relies on the Canadian Rangers, a reserve component with limited training. A comparison is stark: 50 highly trained Danish patrol personnel would be far more effective than 5,000 minimally trained Canadian Rangers in defending against an invading force.

Denmark’s advantage isn’t solely about equipment; it’s about preparedness. They maintain a system of military conscription, ensuring a trained reserve force. Recent changes even include conscription for women and an extended service term, bolstering their readiness.

Canada has long labored under a dangerous delusion – the belief that we are a military equal to our NATO allies. The reality, as demonstrated by a clear-eyed comparison with Denmark, is far more sobering. We must confront this truth and prioritize genuine military preparedness.

The time for complacency is over. We must move beyond rhetoric and invest in the modern equipment and training necessary to defend our sovereignty, standing as a true equal alongside allies like Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden.
