The scheme unraveled during a routine X-ray inspection. Suspicious images within four boxes, originating from the Democratic Republic of Congo, triggered a deeper investigation by customs officials working in concert with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group.
A meticulous, 100% physical examination confirmed their suspicions: nearly 17 kilograms of contraband, valued at P114.566 million, lay hidden amongst the stones. The precise nature of the illicit substance remains undisclosed as the investigation continues.
The shipment’s attempt to breach Philippine borders represents a clear violation of both the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act. Authorities are pursuing the case with the full weight of these laws.
Customs Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno emphasized the broader implications of this seizure. This isn’t simply about law enforcement, he stated, but about safeguarding the well-being of communities across the nation.
