A simple newspaper competition ignited a lifelong passion for space in Jennifer Barry, transforming a curious Year 7 student into a leading space engineer. It began with a call for young minds to envision the future of space exploration, a challenge presented in the pages of a daily commute read.

Jennifer, traveling to school in London, submitted a bold vision: a plan for a future human habitat, a refuge should Earth become uninhabitable due to pollution. She barely registered the submission, until a surprising email arrived during a family holiday, announcing her as one of the six winners.

The prize wasn’t a book, as her father initially assumed, but an all-expenses-paid trip to Space Camp Turkey. Months later, she found herself immersed in a world she’d only dreamed of, experiencing astronaut training and simulated lunar walks.

Space Camp wasn’t just about thrills; it revealed the vast network of careers that underpin space missions. This realization solidified Jennifer’s burgeoning passion for science, fueling her throughout her teenage years and beyond. It was a pivotal moment, shaping her future trajectory.

Adding to the extraordinary experience, a special edition of the newspaper featuring the competition winners – including Jennifer’s entry – journeyed to the International Space Station with astronaut Richard Garriott. He conducted experiments based on the winning ideas during his ten-day mission.

Inspired by the trip and a VIP day with Garriott at the National Space Centre, Jennifer pursued physics and astronomy at Southampton University, earning a master’s degree in 2018. She then discovered her calling in engineering, specifically focusing on space sustainability.

Jennifer quickly became a powerful voice for keeping space clean and safe for future generations. Her work led her to address the United Nations’ Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and contribute to the European Space Agency’s Zero Debris initiative, tackling the growing threat of space junk.

Recognition came in December when she was awarded the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s Young Woman Engineer of the Year. Jennifer saw this not as a personal achievement, but as a platform to amplify underrepresented voices and dismantle stereotypes within the field.

Driven by a desire to inspire the next generation, Jennifer dedicated over 500 hours to STEM outreach programs. She believes competitions like the one that launched her journey are vital for showing young people – particularly those from underrepresented groups – that a career in space is within their reach.

Jennifer now works as a Senior Systems Engineer at Surrey Satellite Technology Limited, where she’s contributing to the design, testing, and construction of a new satellite, slated for launch by 2028. Her journey, sparked by a simple newspaper competition, continues to reach for the stars.

She emphasizes that experiences like Space Camp broaden perceptions of what engineering truly encompasses, offering a glimpse into its dynamic and innovative nature. For many young people, it’s the first time they can truly envision themselves as part of that future.
