A nationwide health alert has been issued, prompting consumers to immediately check their soap collections. Health Canada has recalled specific bars from Lake of the Woods Sunrise Soap Co., an Ontario-based artisan soap maker, due to a potential chemical concern.
The recall affects approximately 400 units of the company’s “Shades of Grey” soap, sold over an extended period – from January 2019 to January 2026. The affected soaps come in three sizes: 16g, 67g, and 135g bars, meaning a wide range of customers may have purchased the product.
Health Canada identified the presence of methyl eugenol in the soap at levels exceeding permitted concentrations. While the chemical is prohibited as a standalone ingredient due to potential carcinogenic effects, it *is* allowed in limited quantities when naturally occurring within botanical extracts.
Currently, no injuries or incidents related to the soap have been reported to either the company or Health Canada. However, as a precaution, authorities are urging anyone possessing the recalled “Shades of Grey” soap to discontinue use immediately and safely dispose of it.
The company proactively addressed the issue, explaining that a recent update to Health Canada’s cosmetic ingredient standards triggered the voluntary removal of the soap. The change relates to the ratio of Bay essential oil used in the formulation.
Lake of the Woods Sunrise Soap Co. emphasized that the soap was previously compliant with all safety guidelines and has been enjoyed by customers for years. They expressed regret at removing the product but reaffirmed their commitment to safety and transparency.
Customers who purchased the soap are encouraged to contact the company directly for a replacement. This recall highlights the ongoing vigilance required to ensure the safety of cosmetic products and the importance of adhering to evolving regulatory standards.
