ENGINEERS ATTACKED: Mob Mistakes Tech Workers for ICE!

A simple lunch in Minneapolis transformed into a harrowing ordeal for a group of software engineers. While enjoying a meal at Clancey’s Deli, they found themselves wrongly accused of being U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, triggering a wave of vitriol and deeply personal attacks.

The ordeal began with an alert on an anti-ICE Signal chat, mistakenly identifying the casually dressed men – all wearing sweatshirts and jackets – as plainclothes agents. One of the engineers, who identified himself as Lee, explained that a friend politically aligned with the anti-ICE movement inadvertently spread the false information after receiving the alert.

Within moments, dozens of protesters descended upon the deli, staring at the men through the windows. The atmosphere quickly escalated from tense observation to outright hostility as the engineers attempted to leave the restaurant.

Outside, the group was met with a barrage of insults and threats. Shouts of “You’re a f------ bootlicker b----!” and “Get out of our f------ neighborhood!” pierced the air, escalating into truly disturbing accusations.

The engineers desperately tried to explain their identities, clarifying they were simply software developers working on projects for various companies. “We do custom apps for a whole bunch of companies around Minnesota and the country,” one of them pleaded, but their explanations fell on deaf ears.

Despite one man’s direct question – “Do I look like an ICE agent?” – a protester chillingly responded, “Yeah, you look like a f------ ICE agent.” The escalating tension was punctuated by the shrill sound of whistles and continued demands to leave.

One engineer, frustrated and bewildered, challenged the protesters’ tactics. “This is what’s wrong with your guys’ cause,” he stated, attempting to reason with the crowd. He further emphasized his lack of support for ICE, simply wanting to enjoy a peaceful meal.

“I don’t support ICE either,” he declared, “I’m just trying to enjoy my lunch!” The incident serves as a stark example of how quickly misinformation can ignite public outrage and the devastating consequences of unchecked accusations.

The engineers’ experience highlights the dangers of online echo chambers and the potential for real-world harm when assumptions replace facts, leaving a group of innocent men subjected to hateful and unfounded attacks.
