COP SHOT: Manhunt for Violent Robbery Crew Ignites!

A tense Sunday in Oshawa unfolded as a 27-year-old man now faces charges after a police-involved shooting left both a suspect and a Durham Regional Police officer injured. The incident began with a call reporting an armed individual, escalating into a confrontation that sent shockwaves through the community.

Officers responding to the scene near Simcoe Street South and Bloor Street East encountered the man wielding a knife. Details remain scarce, but the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) confirmed an “interaction” led to gunfire striking both the suspect and the officer. Crucially, investigators have stated the suspect was not believed to be armed with a firearm.

The injured officer was rushed to a trauma centre with critical injuries, while the suspect received treatment for serious injuries at another hospital. As of Sunday night, both were reported to be in stable condition, a small measure of relief amidst the unfolding drama. The SIU is actively seeking witnesses and any available video or photographic evidence.

Meanwhile, in Pickering, authorities are hunting for at least four suspects following a brazen smash-and-grab robbery at Peoples Jewellers within the Shops at Pickering City Centre. The incident occurred Thursday evening, sending shoppers scrambling as the masked individuals systematically smashed display cases.

The suspects made off with a significant quantity of jewelry before fleeing the mall in a waiting vehicle. Thankfully, no employees were physically harmed during the chaotic event. Police are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to come forward with any information, including potential video footage.

Further west, in Kitchener, Waterloo Regional Police are investigating a similar “smash and grab” robbery targeting a business on Kingsway Drive. A group of individuals entered the store Sunday morning and stole a selection of electronics, including smart watches, tablets, and televisions.

This type of robbery, characterized by swift entry, destruction of barriers, and rapid theft, is becoming a growing concern for retailers. Police are currently seeking information regarding the suspects and are urging anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact them or Crime Stoppers.

In a separate incident in Oshawa, police also reported the arrest of a 39-year-old man from Bradford following an assault in the west end, and are investigating a series of stabbings that occurred downtown. These incidents underscore a period of heightened criminal activity across the Durham Region.
