JUDGE IN 'ORPHAN' HORROR SHOT: Manhunt Begins!

JUDGE IN 'ORPHAN' HORROR SHOT: Manhunt Begins!

A chilling attack unfolded at the Indiana home of Judge Steven Meyer and his wife, Kimberly, shattering their Sunday afternoon. Gunfire erupted through their front door, leaving the judge wounded in the arm and his wife injured in the hip. Both are now recovering, but the identity of the shooter remains a haunting mystery.

This violent act casts a disturbing shadow over a case that already gripped the nation – the perplexing story of Natalia Grace. Judge Meyer presided over the trials of Michael and Kristine Barnett, the adoptive parents who claimed Grace was not a child, but a dangerous adult masquerading as one.

The Barnetts adopted Grace, a Ukrainian orphan with dwarfism, believing her to be six years old in 2010. Their lives quickly descended into turmoil, as they allege Grace exhibited increasingly unsettling behavior. They claim she was a manipulative figure, hoarding knives and even threatening their biological children.

The couple pointed to Grace’s condition, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, which resulted in a small stature and made determining her age without medical records difficult. Adding to the mystery, Grace’s birth certificate was lost due to flooding at the Ukrainian hospital where she was born, creating an impossible verification challenge.

Accusations flew, painting a picture of a calculated “con artist” and “sociopath,” as described in Investigation Discovery’s documentary. The Barnetts detailed terrifying claims of Grace attempting to poison her adoptive mother and plotting harm against their sons. Their fear was palpable, with Michael Barnett stating he believed someone would die within five years.

However, Grace vehemently denied these accusations, claiming she was the victim of abuse. She revealed alleged instances of being pepper-sprayed and improperly medicated. She insisted her side of the story held a hidden truth, waiting to be uncovered.

The legal battle escalated, culminating in a Marion County court legally changing Grace’s birth year from 2003 to 1989, effectively declaring her an adult. The Barnetts then moved Grace into an apartment and fled to Canada with their biological sons, seeking escape from the escalating situation.

Neighbors observing Grace in her new living arrangement noted her struggles with basic self-care and household tasks, further fueling the debate surrounding her true age and capabilities. The Barnetts were later charged with neglect of a dependent, stemming from Grace’s disability.

Throughout the proceedings, Judge Meyer consistently referred to Grace as an adult, upholding the court’s ruling on her birth year. He also imposed a gag order on all parties involved, attempting to contain the intense media scrutiny surrounding the case.

Michael Barnett was ultimately found not guilty by a jury in 2022, and Kristine Barnett’s charges were dismissed by Judge Meyer earlier this year. Despite the intense scrutiny, Grace has not been named a suspect in the shooting and faces no criminal charges related to the attack on the Meyers.

Law enforcement continues to investigate the shooting, seeking any information that might lead to the identification of the perpetrator. Kimberly Meyer expressed gratitude for the swift response of investigators and the overwhelming support from the community in a recent statement.

The investigation remains active, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward. The shooting has reignited the unsettling questions surrounding the Natalia Grace case, leaving a community grappling with fear and a search for answers.
