Illegal immigrant allegedly ran from deadly wrong-way DUI crash that killed motorcyclist, records show

A Sunday night on Interstate 640 West in Knoxville turned tragic when a wrong-way driver collided head-on with a motorcyclist, claiming a life and sparking a manhunt. The devastating crash, reported just after 7:15 p.m. near the Broadway exit, instantly extinguished the life of the motorcyclist, whose identity is currently withheld as authorities notify family.

The driver of the passenger vehicle, identified as 27-year-old Eric Ramon Alcantara-Guevara, didn’t stop. Instead, he and other occupants fled the scene, abandoning the victim and attempting to disappear into the night. Knoxville police responded swiftly, launching an immediate search that culminated in Alcantara-Guevara’s apprehension shortly after the collision.

Investigators quickly determined Alcantara-Guevara was driving against the flow of traffic when the fatal impact occurred. He now faces severe charges, including vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, and leaving the scene of an accident knowing a death resulted. A $125,000 bond was set, but his freedom remains uncertain.

Court records reveal a significant development in the case: a detainer has been placed on Alcantara-Guevara by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This indicates federal authorities believe he may be in the country unlawfully, adding another layer to the unfolding legal proceedings.

Alcantara-Guevara made initial court appearances on January 20th, fulfilling requirements for bond hearings. He is scheduled to return to court on February 26th, as the investigation continues and the weight of the charges bears down. The Knoxville Police Department is meticulously piecing together the events of that night.

The case has drawn attention from Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn, who issued a strong statement demanding accountability. She called for the maximum penalty under the law and immediate deportation, emphasizing the need to protect the Knoxville community from potential further harm.

While details surrounding Alcantara-Guevara’s immigration history remain unconfirmed by ICE, the agency’s involvement underscores the complex nature of the case. The focus now rests on delivering justice for the victim and ensuring a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to this devastating tragedy.
