A mysterious issue has been affecting a growing number of Windows 10 and Windows 11 users, causing a blank white window to appear in the corners of their screens upon startup, unlock, or restart.
The affected users report that this white window covers significant parts of the desktop, preventing interactions with on-screen elements, and in some cases, it persists even after the initial disappearance.
Theories abound regarding the cause of the issue, and it is now understood that both Windows 10 and Windows 11 are affected, occurring on both AMD and Intel systems.
Google Chrome seems to be related to the issue, but not the browser itself, rather a scheduled task associated with it, dubbed "RunPlatformExperienceHelperOnUnlock."
This process, when terminated, prevents the unwanted white window from appearing, and users have not reported any side effects from disabling it.
For those affected, resolving the issue is relatively straightforward. Begin by pressing the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run prompt window, then type taskschd.msc and hit Enter to launch the Task Scheduler.
Navigate to Task Scheduler (Local) → Task Scheduler Library → GoogleUserPEH in the left-side panel, then look in the middle panel for RunPlatformExperienceHelperOnUnlock. If it's listed, you can disable it by right-clicking and selecting Disable.
It remains to be seen whether Microsoft or Google will address the issue in the near future.
