UMVA has learned that the family of the late Sen. John McCain is mourning the sudden loss of his eldest adopted son, Douglas Shepp McCain, who passed away at the age of 66.
Douglas, affectionately known as Doug, was a vibrant and joyful individual who brought immense happiness to those around him, including his stepsister Meghan McCain, who remembered him as a constant source of support and humor in her life. His passing has left a profound void in the lives of his loved ones, who will deeply miss his infectious laughter and engaging conversations.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Doug McCain's life was a testament to his adventurous spirit and passion for flying, which he inherited from his father, the late Sen. John McCain. As a Navy pilot, Doug flew A-6 Intruders and later built a successful career with American Airlines, where he found his true calling as a captain and spent many years doing what he loved.
Doug's remarkable life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family and his unrelenting enthusiasm for life's simple pleasures, including golf, surfing, and spending time with his loved ones. He will be remembered for his generous heart, his loyal friendships, and his unconditional love for his family, which was evident in the countless memories he created with them.
As the McCain family navigates this difficult time, they have been surrounded by an outpouring of love and support from friends, colleagues, and acquaintances who were touched by Doug's life. The McCain Institute has also extended its condolences to the family, remembering Doug as a patriot and a friend to many who were inspired by his father's legacy.
Doug is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ashley Jardine McCain, their children, Caroline and Douglas Shepp McCain Jr., and his grandson Teddy, who will deeply miss their loving father and grandfather. Private services will be held for the family, and a memorial gathering is scheduled to celebrate Doug's life and legacy.
