& OUT: Political DINOSAURS Must GO!

Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has ignited a political firestorm with a bold proposal: a mandatory retirement age of 75 for all federal officeholders. This includes the President, members of Congress, Cabinet officials, and even Supreme Court Justices. He argues it’s time to inject fresh perspectives and energy into Washington.

Emanuel, 66, doesn’t shy away from the fact that this rule would eventually apply to him should he pursue the presidency in 2028. He insists on a level playing field, stating that exemptions would undermine the very principle of the change he advocates. “You can’t say ‘here’s what I want to do to change Washington’…but I get an exemption,” he declared.

The implications of such a rule are significant. It would have immediately disqualified former President Donald Trump, now 79, from seeking another term. It also would have prevented President Joe Biden, currently 83, from serving his current presidency. The proposal directly addresses concerns about the age and vitality of leaders making critical decisions.

Currently, a substantial number of lawmakers are already within the affected age range. Seventeen senators and forty-five House members are 75 or older, potentially facing forced retirement under Emanuel’s plan. The Supreme Court would also see changes, with Justices Thomas and Alito immediately ineligible to continue their service.

Emanuel frames the proposal as a matter of practicality, drawing parallels to limitations in other sectors. He points out that there are age restrictions for military service and many private sector jobs. His blunt assessment – suggesting those over 75 should “work on your golf swing” – underscores his conviction.

This isn’t a new debate. During the recent presidential election, Nikki Haley proposed mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75, reflecting growing public anxieties about the age and cognitive abilities of candidates. Emanuel’s proposal takes a more definitive, age-based approach.

Rather than pursuing a constitutional amendment, Emanuel intends to champion legislation to enact the age limit. However, the constitutionality of such a law remains questionable, and gaining congressional support could prove challenging, given the median age of senators is already 64.

Emanuel envisions this age limit as part of a larger overhaul of government ethics and anti-corruption measures. He believes a crackdown on financial conflicts of interest – including stock trading and family enrichment – is crucial to restoring public trust. He argues the current administration has, in his view, exacerbated the problems of Washington’s “swamp.”

He’s urging the Democratic Party to embrace this comprehensive reform package as a central message for the upcoming midterm elections, alongside proposals like raising the minimum wage. Emanuel believes a commitment to genuine change is essential to reconnect with voters and address deep-seated concerns about government integrity.
