TRUMP SHUTS DOWN NJ: Gateway Tunnel SABOTAGED!

A fierce battle has erupted over the future of the Gateway Tunnel, a vital rail link connecting New Jersey and New York City, with newly inaugurated New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill directly challenging President Trump to restore critical funding.

Sherrill wasted no time, framing the president’s decision to freeze $16 billion for the project as a deliberate and damaging “illegal attack on New Jersey,” one that jeopardizes the economic well-being of countless families.

The stakes are immense. Sherrill warned that continued obstruction could obliterate nearly 100,000 jobs and erase $20 billion in economic activity, a devastating blow to a region that represents a global economic powerhouse.

The conflict began during a federal government shutdown last fall, when the Trump administration abruptly halted funding not only for the tunnel but also for the Second Avenue Subway extension in New York City.

The administration justified the freeze by pointing fingers at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, accusing him of being responsible for the shutdown, despite Schumer’s long-standing advocacy for the Gateway project.

Construction had already begun, fueled by pledges of approximately $12 billion in federal support, and roughly 1,000 union workers remain on site, their livelihoods hanging in the balance as a temporary line of credit nears its expiration.

The White House countered Sherrill’s accusations, placing the blame squarely on Democrats, alleging they are unwilling to negotiate and prioritize American interests.

However, the urgency extends beyond political maneuvering. The existing Hudson River rail tunnels, over a century old, suffered severe damage during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, leaving them vulnerable to catastrophic failure.

These aging tunnels currently carry 70,000 New Jersey commuters daily, and Amtrak has warned that the collapse of even one tunnel could cripple rail traffic into New York City by as much as 75 percent.

The chorus of outrage isn’t limited to New Jersey. New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand condemned the funding hold as “inexcusable,” demanding immediate release of the funds to protect workers and safeguard this critical infrastructure.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul echoed these sentiments, characterizing the freeze as a vindictive act aimed at harming New Yorkers and reaffirming her unwavering commitment to seeing the Gateway Tunnel completed.

The Gateway Tunnel is no mere construction project; it’s a lifeline for the region, a symbol of economic vitality, and a testament to the urgent need for infrastructure investment in the 21st century.
