HERO BROTHERS LOST: Frozen Pond Tragedy Shocks Nation!

HERO BROTHERS LOST: Frozen Pond Tragedy Shocks Nation!

A Texas winter, normally a spectacle of fleeting beauty, became the backdrop for unimaginable heartbreak. Three young brothers, ages six, eight, and nine, lost their lives after falling through the ice of a frozen pond in Bonham, a small city northeast of Dallas.

The tragedy unfolded with terrifying speed. The youngest, Howard, slipped beneath the surface first, prompting his older brothers to instinctively rush to his aid. Their mother, Cheyenne Hangaman, witnessed the unfolding horror and without hesitation, plunged into the icy water herself.

“I started running toward the pond and I jumped in,” Hangaman recounted, her voice heavy with grief. “I tried to save them while also trying to keep myself alive.” But the frigid water quickly overwhelmed her, leaving her paralyzed with fear and unable to reach her sons.

A local high school football coach, hearing the desperate cries, also joined the frantic rescue attempt. Despite their combined efforts, the icy grip of the pond proved too strong. A neighbor eventually pulled Hangaman from the water, but the boys remained trapped.

The eight and nine-year-olds were recovered by the neighbor and first responders, but despite immediate medical attention, they couldn’t be revived. The youngest, six-year-old Howard, remained submerged for an agonizing period before his body was finally recovered after an extensive search.

Hangaman, consumed by sorrow, spoke of her sons’ unique spirits. Oldest son, EJ, lived for football and a fresh haircut. Kaleb possessed a sweetness that touched everyone he met, and Howard, the playful one, always brought joy to any gathering.

The Bonham Independent School District was plunged into mourning, with Superintendent Dr. Lance Hamlin expressing the community’s “profound sadness and heavy hearts.” Counselors were made available to support grieving students, staff, and families grappling with the devastating loss.

This tragedy wasn’t an isolated incident during the winter storm. In Frisco, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth Angle, a sophomore and soccer player at Wakeland High School, died in a sledding accident. The sled she was riding, pulled by a Jeep, struck a curb and collided with a tree.

Another teenage girl involved in the sledding accident remained on life support as authorities continued their investigation. Police issued a stark warning about the dangers of snow and ice, emphasizing the potential for serious and even fatal accidents.

The winter storm had blanketed much of Texas, and the nation, in a treacherous layer of ice, sleet, and snow. What began as a picturesque winter scene quickly transformed into a period of profound loss and a somber reminder of nature’s unforgiving power.
