ICE Under FIRE: Public Turns as Brutality Concerns SKYROCKET!

A surprising divide is emerging in public opinion regarding President Trump’s approach to immigration, even as a majority continues to approve of his handling of border security. While 52% of voters currently support his border security efforts – a figure that remains his strongest area of public approval – a clear majority, 55%, disapprove of his broader immigration policies.

This discrepancy isn’t lost on observers. The data suggests a critical distinction between securing the border and managing those already within the country. Where voters see effectiveness in controlling access, they express growing concern over the methods employed once individuals are inside the U.S.

A particularly striking trend is the increasing perception that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is acting “too aggressively.” This sentiment has surged by 10 points since July, reaching 59% of all voters. The shift isn’t confined to traditional opposition groups; it’s gaining traction across the political spectrum.

The change is especially pronounced among White voters without a college degree (up 14 points), moderates (up 19 points), and independents (up 22 points). Even within the President’s own base, concerns are rising – a 9-point increase among Trump voters, 14 points among Republican women, and a significant 23-point jump among Republicans who don’t identify with the “MAGA” movement.

When pressed on the specifics of ICE’s perceived overreach, voters are more likely to cite concerns about tactics rather than the individuals being targeted. A substantial 44% point to “using too much force,” while 23% believe the agency is “targeting the wrong people.” Nearly a third, 29%, express concern about both.

This growing unease coincides with heightened scrutiny of ICE’s actions, including a recent incident where federal agents fatally shot a protester during a demonstration. The timing underscores the sensitivity surrounding the agency’s enforcement practices.

Interestingly, despite the disapproval of immigration policies, only 17% of Democrats approve of Trump’s handling of border security, compared to a robust 89% among Republicans. This highlights the deeply partisan nature of the issue, even within the broader context of immigration reform.

Support for abolishing ICE has doubled since 2018, now reaching 36% of voters. This increase is driven by significant gains among White voters, women, independents, and Democrats. While opposition remains steady at 42%, the number of undecided voters has decreased considerably.

The debate extends to the role of local governments, with a near-even split on whether they should be required to cooperate with ICE. Republicans overwhelmingly favor cooperation (85%), while Democrats are equally opposed (83%). Independents lean heavily against mandated collaboration, by a 30-point margin.

These findings reveal a complex and evolving public sentiment. While border security remains a relative strength for the President, the growing concerns surrounding ICE’s tactics and broader immigration policies present a significant challenge, demonstrating that the issue is far from settled.
