COSTCO LOCKDOWN: Tech Heists Force DRAMATIC Action!

COSTCO LOCKDOWN: Tech Heists Force DRAMATIC Action!

The assumption that exclusive, membership-only stores are immune to retail theft proved startlingly wrong recently. A curious observation on a popular online forum revealed a surprising security measure at one Costco location: the removal of RAM from their display computers.

A user named “accent2012” first noticed the oddity – a row of otherwise fully functioning desktops, showcasing vibrant RGB lighting, but conspicuously lacking memory modules. The post quickly gained traction as another user claimed an employee had confirmed the reason: rampant theft of the valuable components.

Considering a 2x16GB kit of RAM can easily fetch around $350, the incentive for a quick, opportunistic grab is undeniable. Adding to the concern, one of the display PCs was also missing its graphics card, suggesting a pattern of targeted theft.

The situation isn’t unique to this single Costco. Reports indicate a growing trend of retailers, including other Costco stores, moving RAM and graphics cards behind counters or placing them in locked cases. This proactive measure aims to deter thieves from easily accessing these high-value items.

The rise in theft coincides with a dramatic surge in the cost of RAM and other PC components. Driven by market forces, the price of DDR5 memory has tripled, even quadrupled, since mid-2025, creating a lucrative target for shoplifters.

This price volatility is so extreme that some retailers are abandoning fixed pricing altogether, opting for a “market price” system reminiscent of seafood counters. The escalating costs are inevitably impacting the price of finished electronics, though not at the same rate.

Ironically, this unusual market dynamic has flipped the script on building versus buying a PC. For gamers seeking a powerful desktop, a pre-built system from a large retailer is now surprisingly more affordable than assembling one from individual parts.

The economies of scale and business-to-business distribution networks allow these retailers to offer significant savings. One example, a gaming desktop equipped with a high-end graphics card and 32GB of RAM, is currently $500 cheaper than sourcing the components separately.

While $2,000 for a gaming PC isn’t necessarily a bargain, it represents a compelling value in a market where building your own system has become significantly more expensive.
