A sweeping investigation is set to bring Minnesota’s Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison before the House Oversight Committee next month. They will testify under oath regarding a burgeoning scandal involving potentially billions in fraudulently obtained welfare funds.
The hearing, scheduled for March 4, 2026, will focus on the alleged misuse of federal funds within Minnesota’s social services programs. Prosecutors estimate the scale of the fraud could reach a staggering $9 billion, drawing intense scrutiny to the administration’s oversight.
Governor Walz, who recently announced he will not seek further political office, has become the central figure in the unfolding crisis. The fraud reportedly exploded during his tenure, prompting accusations of inaction and even retaliation against those who attempted to raise alarms.
Committee Chairman James Comer stated that Americans deserve a full accounting of how taxpayer dollars were allegedly squandered. He emphasized that previous testimony from Minnesota lawmakers pointed to a failure to address widespread fraud and a silencing of internal whistleblowers.
The House Oversight Committee initiated its investigation in December 2025, following the discovery of what lawmakers describe as a complex network of fraud and money laundering. The alleged scheme targeted funds earmarked for critical programs supporting children, the disabled, and vulnerable Medicaid recipients.
Investigators are meticulously examining financial records and communications, having requested documents from both Walz and Ellison. They’ve also subpoenaed Suspicious Activity Reports from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, seeking to trace the flow of illicit funds.
A recent report from the Minnesota Office of the Legislative Auditor further fueled the investigation, revealing systemic failures within the Department of Human Services. The audit found a widespread lack of internal controls and non-compliance with essential requirements, creating an environment ripe for abuse.
The first hearing in January featured testimony from Minnesota lawmakers who described years of ignored warnings and deeply rooted systemic issues. They painted a picture of a system unable – or unwilling – to prevent the alleged fraud from taking hold.
Adding another layer of complexity, questions have arisen regarding Attorney General Ellison’s involvement. A 2021 audio recording surfaced, depicting a meeting with members of the Somali community who were later convicted of defrauding the state of millions.
The upcoming testimony promises to be a pivotal moment in the investigation, potentially revealing crucial details about the extent of the fraud and the actions – or inactions – of those in positions of power. The committee aims to ensure accountability and prevent similar abuses in the future.
