INDONESIA'S BRUTAL PUNISHMENT: 140 LASHES FOR LOVE & A DRINK!

INDONESIA'S BRUTAL PUNISHMENT: 140 LASHES FOR LOVE & A DRINK!

A woman and her lover endured a brutal public punishment in Indonesia’s Aceh province, receiving 140 lashes each. The sentence, one of the most severe in 25 years, was carried out for the crimes of sex outside marriage and consuming alcohol – both strictly forbidden under the region’s Islamic law.

The caning unfolded before a crowd of onlookers, the couple’s backs repeatedly struck by a rattan cane. The woman’s pain became unbearable; she sobbed, then collapsed, and was carried away on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance. Her companion suffered through the full punishment beside her.

The staggering penalty – 100 lashes for the sexual offense and 40 for alcohol – marks a particularly harsh application of Sharia law since its formal introduction in Aceh in 2001. Aceh stands alone in Indonesia as the only region governed by this strict religious code.

This was not an isolated incident. Six individuals were publicly punished that day for violating Aceh’s Islamic regulations. Among them was a Sharia police officer, accused alongside his female partner of being alone together – a transgression under local law.

The officer and his partner each received 23 lashes, a stark demonstration that even those tasked with enforcing the law are not exempt from its reach. An official emphasized the embarrassment of punishing a member of their own force, stating, “We make no exceptions.”

Public canings are a common practice in Aceh, used to punish offenses ranging from gambling and drinking to skipping prayers, premarital sex, and same-sex relationships. These punishments are a visible display of enforced morality.

Last year, two men were publicly caned for homosexuality in Aceh, an event witnessed by dozens. This was the fourth such punishment since 2006, a consequence of a political concession made to resolve a long-standing separatist conflict.

The men, aged 24 and 18, were whipped repeatedly by masked enforcers, receiving dozens of strokes each. After every 20 lashes, they were offered water and medical attention, a brief respite from the agonizing pain.

Their arrest followed a disturbing incident where residents reportedly broke into their rented room, discovering them embracing and turning them over to Sharia police. Though initially sentenced to more lashes, their punishment was reduced slightly due to time already served.

The final blows left one of the men barely able to stand, requiring assistance to be carried away, a harrowing image of the physical and emotional toll of the punishment. The scene underscored the severity and uncompromising nature of the law in Aceh.
