The promise of a playful puppy turned into a horrifying nightmare for a South Carolina woman. Dana Marie Kinlaw, 40, believed she was driving to meet a seller, a simple transaction that masked a calculated and brutal betrayal.
On January 22nd, Kinlaw journeyed to the isolated backroads of Effingham County, roughly 95 miles east of Columbia. She wasn’t alone; she traveled with a friend, 19-year-old Iryanna Fleming, unaware that this trip would end in unimaginable violence.
Investigators now believe the puppy was a cruel deception, a lure orchestrated by Fleming, along with Daquinn Thomas, 31, and Nikko Carraway. The seemingly innocent errand was, in reality, a carefully constructed trap designed to bring Kinlaw to a desolate location.
Sheriff TJ Joye revealed that Kinlaw and Fleming drove together, ostensibly to finalize the puppy purchase. But the wooded area near Atlantic and Springbranch Roads held no playful companion, only a waiting ambush.
The ambush unfolded with shocking speed and brutality. Kinlaw was fatally shot, the first act in a horrifying sequence of events that would leave investigators reeling.
But the violence didn’t end there. After the shooting, the suspects allegedly doused Kinlaw’s body in a flammable liquid, setting her ablaze inside her own vehicle. They then abandoned her, leaving her to burn on the side of the road.
Deputies responded to frantic calls reporting a car consumed by flames. The scene they encountered was devastating – a vehicle engulfed in fire, and within it, the remains of a human being. The grim discovery would soon be identified as Dana Marie Kinlaw.
The Florence County Coroner, Keith Von Lutcken, confirmed Kinlaw’s identity, and her remains were transported to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for a thorough autopsy, seeking to uncover the full extent of the tragedy.
Law enforcement moved swiftly. Fleming and Thomas were apprehended within hours of the discovery, facing charges of murder, first-degree arson, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The arrests offered a small measure of justice in the face of such senseless loss.
Days later, Nikko Carraway was also taken into custody, charged with the same offenses. The investigation continues, revealing a possible connection to a recent homicide in neighboring Darlington County, suggesting a motive rooted in retribution.
