SENIORS UNDER ATTACK: Thieves Prey on Elderly – 11 BUSTED!

SENIORS UNDER ATTACK: Thieves Prey on Elderly – 11 BUSTED!

A chilling pattern emerged in Hamilton last year: a surge in calculated thefts targeting its most vulnerable citizens – seniors. What began as a trickle of incidents quickly escalated, exceeding the combined total from the previous four years by November alone, prompting a dedicated investigation known as Project Heirloom.

These weren’t random acts of opportunity. Thieves deliberately sought out elderly individuals in everyday locations – bustling retail stores, crowded parking lots, and public spaces – employing carefully orchestrated distractions to steal wallets, jewelry, and vital banking information.

Project Heirloom swiftly uncovered a network operating with unsettling precision. Investigators discovered suspects consistently utilizing short-term rentals in the Scarborough area and rotating rental vehicles to evade detection, making pursuit a frustrating game of catch-up.

Three suspects – Florian Stoian, a 40-year-old Markham man, and Ana Petrescu, a 46-year-old Scarborough woman, and an unidentified man are sought for distracting at least two senior citizens while they shopped and stealing their wallets on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025.

The thieves weren’t limiting their crimes to Hamilton. They’d descend for single-day sprees, then vanish for weeks, replicating their tactics across Southern Ontario, leaving a trail of devastated victims in their wake.

A particularly brazen incident on November 8th saw three suspects targeting seniors at a Food Basics and a Mission Thrift Store, swiftly pilfering wallets and PINs before draining thousands of dollars from bank accounts. Two suspects in this case, Ana Marie Petrescu and Florian Stoian, remain at large, wanted on multiple charges including theft and identity fraud.

The network’s reach extended further. On November 18th, a quick-thinking citizen intervened during a distraction theft at another Food Basics, disrupting the suspects’ plans and prompting a swift arrest following a search in Scarborough.

Florin Zmarandache and Elvira Zmarandache, who are believed to have fled Canada, are wanted in Project Heirloom, an investigation into distraction thefts.

However, two individuals, Florin and Elvira Zmarandache, are believed to have fled the country, leaving outstanding warrants for their arrest related to multiple theft charges. The investigation revealed a disturbing trend: victims distracted while wallets were lifted from shopping carts, then exploited for fraudulent purchases.

The stakes escalated dramatically on December 21st when an elderly victim in a Queen Street North parking lot was robbed of a Patek Philippe watch valued between $250,000 and $325,000. The thieves employed the same tactic – distracting the victim with cheap costume jewelry before making off with the priceless timepiece.

Subsequent searches in Scarborough yielded the costume jewelry used in the robbery, along with luxury items purchased with stolen funds. Geovani Alexandru and Stefania Alesandru, arrested in connection with this incident, remain in custody facing robbery and fraud charges.

Just weeks later, on January 6th, another senior was targeted in the parking lot of Starsky Fine Foods, again lured by the offer of costume jewelry. Nicolae Alexandru and Rozaura Sirbu are currently wanted in connection with this robbery.

To date, Project Heirloom has resulted in eleven arrests and eighty-four charges laid, but investigators believe this is just the beginning. The operation remains ongoing, and authorities suspect there are additional victims yet to come forward.

Anyone with information regarding these crimes is urged to contact Hamilton Police or Crime Stoppers anonymously, helping to bring these predatory individuals to justice and protect the community’s most vulnerable members.
