SEATTLE CRASHES & BURNS: Millions Paid for CHOP Chaos!

SEATTLE CRASHES & BURNS: Millions Paid for CHOP Chaos!

The summer of 2020 was marked by unrest, and in Seattle, that unrest took a particularly dramatic turn. A section of the city was relinquished to protesters, becoming known as the CHOP zone – a self-proclaimed autonomous area born from the fervor following the death of George Floyd.

What began as a protest quickly devolved into a dangerous reality. The CHOP zone became an island where law enforcement hesitated to enter, and a palpable sense of lawlessness took hold. For weeks, the city administration allowed the situation to persist, a decision that would soon have devastating consequences.

On June 29th, 2020, a young life was tragically cut short within the CHOP zone. Antonio Mays Jr. was fatally shot, and the ensuing chaos hampered emergency responders attempting to reach him. The delay, born from the zone’s unique and uncontrolled environment, became a central point of contention.

Antonio Mays Sr., his father, refused to accept the circumstances surrounding his son’s death. He filed a lawsuit against the city of Seattle, arguing negligence in their response to the shooting and the broader management of the CHOP zone. The case finally reached a King County jury.

After twelve days of deliberation, the jury delivered a resounding verdict. They found the city of Seattle negligent in its emergency response and directly linked that negligence to Antonio Mays Jr.’s death. The decision marked a pivotal moment, holding the city accountable for the events that unfolded.

The financial weight of the verdict is substantial. Antonio Mays Sr. was awarded over $26 million, while Antonio Mays Jr.’s estate received approximately $4 million. The total damages exceed $30.5 million, a stark consequence of the city’s actions – or inaction.

The courtroom was filled with emotion as the verdict was read. Antonio Mays Sr. embraced his lawyer, overcome with grief and a sense of justice finally served. It was the first public airing of the full story surrounding the tragic shooting, a story that had been shrouded in controversy for years.

The CHOP zone, initially described by some as a potential “summer of love,” became a symbol of a city grappling with complex issues of protest, policing, and public safety. The jury’s decision serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of those turbulent times and the responsibility of city leadership.
